Physical
Education was a favourite subject of mine at school and,
understandably, played a very influential part of my development as a
professional cyclist. Thanks to the influence of my inspired PE
Teachers and
Coaches I was encouraged to apply for the four year, Secondary
Specialist
Teacher Education Programme at Wits. I respectfully acknowledge the
wisdom of
my Lecturers who helped me shape my career into how it has so
remarkably
unfolded. My
current position is CEO of Cycle Lab, South Africa. From humble
beginnings in a garage at home this massive industry has grown and
developed
thanks to the inspired support of my family and my colleagues.
Currently, Cycle
Lab and its subsidiaries, is a multi-million Rand (ZAR) business. It
supports a
pro cycling team consisting of the top ladies in SA and it engages with
thousands of recreational cyclists every day. As part of its commitment
to
enabling others, we have become proud supporters of the Move-It,
Moving
Matters™ The
programme involves a journey of motoric evolution for the Learner.
Initially, its focus is skill development, then, and in a parallel
relationship
with the developmental trends of the Learner in the Intermediate Phase,
it
takes the participant through an amazing range of activity challenges
which
builds the Learners confidence to participate in any sport-orientated
activity
thereafter. Part of this journey is going to involve a bicycle! How
exciting is
that! I am looking forward to advancing this Initiative in any way I can knowing that it can fill a vital gap in the education of millions of Learners in South Africa and beyond. Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information about the programme. |

As one of
South African’s leading all-round cricketers, I know what it takes to
sharpen
the skillset needed to be the best you can be. But getting to there is
entirely
due to access to and participation in a wide range of play activities
that
become the building blocks to ones road to success in a particular
sport. As a
child I was fortunate enough to learn the basics of throwing, catching,
hitting, and kicking in Primary School, which were then honed into
sport-specific skills for Tennis, Cricket, Athletics, Rugby and Hockey
in High
School. I can attribute my success in Cricket to the wide competitive
experience I had in many sports as I was growing up. I appreciate now,
more
than ever, the significant influence that my Physical Education
Teachers and
School Sport Coaches had on my life (amongst others). It is such a pity
that
nowadays young Learners are not sufficiently exposed to specialist
trained
Physical Educators, this due to an unfortunate decision made in 1999,
to remove
Physical Education from the Curriculum. What a gap this has left! The good
news is that there is an amazing Initiative that fills this gap! It
called: Move-It,
Moving Matters™ I am
Proud to be an Ambassador of this Initiative and hope that my
involvement might
inspire others to get behind this Initiative so that thousands more
young South
African Learners gain essential skills for life. Learners who are
participating
in this 4-year Intermediate Phase Programme are tracked and it is now
possible
to identify talented learners through the Move-It, Moving Matters™ |
